Welcome

Message from the producer

Welcome to the 30th annual Edmonton Folk Music Festival. I hope you will experience all that our festival has to offer, from brilliant artists to the top volunteers in the world of folk festivals.

Please treat this festival as your own, because it is.

Terry Wickham Producer

Message from the chair

On behalf of the board and members of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival Society, welcome to the 30th annual Edmonton Folkfest. The loyalty of our audience, as demonstrated by the June 4th sold-out date for weekend passes, is a constant inspiration to us all to make our festival the best that it can be.

Along with the audience, there are many others who contribute to our ongoing success. The Cloverdale community and surrounding area graciously share their little part of our beautiful river valley each year providing a perfect natural setting for our musical weekend. The 2000-plus volunteers who work hard to make the Folkfest experience a positive one for our patrons, the performers and other volunteers are second to none. The continuing support of our corporate sponsors and all three levels of government, allows us to present the festival at an affordable price for the entire family to enjoy. And of course our loyal and dedicated staff, led by artistic director, Terry Wickham, manage the myriad details involved in putting together this world-class musical event. Thank you all.

The addition of a Wednesday night show this year in support of the Festival Endowment Fund has been challenging and exciting. After many hours of preparation for this year’s festival I am ready to sit back and enjoy the music. As always, I’m sure there will be many wonderful musical surprises. Have a great festival and I'll see you on the hill!

Since 1981 we’ve had the privilege of using this natural amphitheatre, which is part of Edmonton’s network of green called Capital City Recreation Park, one of the longest urban parks in the world. The location makes us unique among folk festivals in being located in the heart of the city.

With 20,000 people per day using the park during the four days

of Folkfest and another 10,000 for the Wednesday concert, it is vital that everybody shows the respect that both the park and the neighbourhoodsaround

it deserve. That means leaving quickly and quietly after every night’s performance, and, of course, leaving nothing behind. Just imagine that it’s your own neighbourhood with thousands of people walking through it late at night when youre trying,to sleep.

We extend a special thank you to the residents of these communities Cloyerdale,

Strathearn and Bonnie Doon for their patience and welcoming us for a long weekend of music. Their goodwill and’support means the festival continues to be a.big success, and hopefully we will be allowed to “borrow” Gallagher Park on the second weekend of August for many years to come.

festival has attracted artists from all over the world. When paired with our local talent, the calibre and diversity of these performers is second to none. Congratulations on celebrating your 30th anniversary! This extraordinary accomplishment is possible because of the exceptional work of hundreds of volunteers and dedicated professionals. Thank you to everyone involved in this dynamic festival. Your hard work continues to enhance Edmonton’s reputation as a passionate city with a love for art, culture and music.

Special thanks to the sponsors for their generous support. You have helped this festival showcase the diversity of our city and the cosmopolitan flavour of our local arts scene. Best wishes to everyone for a fun-filled weekend of world-class folk music!

Message from Hon. Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta

On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to welcome everyone to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

For 30 years, this dynamic event has captivated Albertans by providing access to musical performances from all over the world. The passion of the musicians and organizers involved in this festival is an inspiration to all artistic organizations in our province.

Ed Stelmach

Through the co-operation of sponsors, volunteers and artists, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival is a wonderful example of community spirit, and an exceptional contributor to Alberta’s quality of life. 1am proud of the vision and dedication of all participants, and I wish audience members the very best as they enjoy another soulful arrangement of concerts.

Enjoy the Festival!

Minister of Canadian Heritage, and Official Languages, James Moore

Our government knows that arts and culture are essential to building vibrant communities and

a strong economy. This is why we are pleased to support events that promote the arts and give artists the opportunity to express their creativity, as well as bring significant benefits to the local economy. For the past 30 years, this is precisely what the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has accomplished. Once again this year, this lively festival will give Edmonton residents and visitors to the region an opportunity to enjoy the wealth of talented performers from across Canada and around the world.

James Moore

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada,

I would like to thank all the organizers, artists, and volunteers who have helped ensure the success of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival for the past three decades. Congratulations on your 30th anniversary!

The INs and OUTs of the festival

Lineups at gates

People can line up starting at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. No overnight queues, please.

The perimeter fence will be roped to reserve spaces

for those who line up early. Saving space in line for others is not allowed. One tarp per person, please.

Controlled entry

To control the crowd at the gates, patrons will enter the site in groups of 25 at one- minute intervals and must walk rather than run. Gates open 90 minutes before the shows begin.

Wristbands

As you enter the gate, you will receive a wristband

in exchange for your ticket 4-day wristband for a festival pass or daily wristband for individual tickets.

« All festival patrons must wear a wristband, except for children 11 years and under.

« If you want to leave the park and return later, the wristband will get you back into the site.

Also

remember there’s... « no sliding

e no pets « no drugs or alcohol

« no video or audio recording equipment

no laser pointers

...-allowed.

Be a Good Neighbour

We take pride in the fact that festival fans are, for the most part, considerate of each other. Here are some neighbourly tips to help make the weekend a great one for everybody.

Blankets, tarps & tents

¢ Tarp sizes are limited to 8 by 10 feet (2.5 by 3 metres.) Use only space you need.

¢ Only low-sitting lawn chairs are allowed, with legs no higher than 15 centimetres and seat backs only up to shoulder height.

Tents and lean-tos can only be used at the top of the hill. No family-size tents they must be 1.5 metres or less in height. Tents are limited to

a designated area, which is a non-smoking zone.

¢ Low-lying lean-tos can be used lower on the hill during inclement weather.

¢ Take your belongings with you at the end of each day. Tarps left overnight can be claimed at the lost & found.

Where are your kids? Do not leave children unattended.

Non-smoking areas

« Main stage non-smoking area is the west side of the hill, using the walkway as the dividing line all the way through the sound booth to the main stage. See signs.

Tents at top of the hill

Session stages

« Family Area and stage ¢ Beer Garden ¢ Hearing-impaired area

e Access area, on the west side of the main stage

Pitch in ¢ Pick up your garbage and put it in a garbage can.

¢ Recycle all recyclables.

¢ Pinch and pocket cigarette butts.

Make room for the evening crowd.

At 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, we will open the

gates to an additional 1,000 patrons for the evening main stage acts. Please help them feel welcome and make space for them.

Dance

Dance to your heart’s content at Stage 1, and at the sides of main stage where there’s lots of room and you won't block anyone’s view.

Stay seated

Please don’t stand in front of others who are seated. They too would like to see the show.

Shh... keep it down

Be considerate. If you must talk during performances, please do so quietly.

Talk it out

Please use friendly discussion to sort out any boundary disputes or other problems with your neighbours.

If all else fails...

If a polite request doesn’t resolve your concern, feel free to contact a Liaison Security crew member (wearing a bright yellow vest). You can also seek assistance at the Security tent, east of Cloverdale Hall by the public plate return station or at the top of the hill.

Get a cover for your candle

Thousands of sparkling lights at night look spectacular, but be careful!

e Candle covers are inexpensive and available from the General Store. Fire regulations make the use of covers for candles mandatory.

e Exercise extreme caution with candles. Clothing, blankets and tarps are highly flammable.

¢ Keep your candle in a cup; please don’t drip wax on the

hill.

Festival Endowment:

Forever Folk Fest

Now four years old, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival Society Endowment Fund exists to ensure that the festival is viable and affordable for future generations to enjoy.

There are many benefits to being a donor:

m The Folk Fest is a registered charity so your donations will give you up to a 50% tax credit. Donors are invited to donor appreciation events.

Donations are matched by a federal program, so your gift multiplies.

There are two ways you can donate:

Living Legacy: You can make a donation at the Information Tent or mail it to the Folk Festival office. Our address is in the front of this book. We will send you a tax receipt.

Bequest: You can plan to donate to the Festival in future by adding the Festival to your will or life insurance policy to reduce the tax burden to your estate and acknowledge that the Folk Festival has made a positive contribution to your life.

Thanks to your generosity and matching grants, from the Government of Canada, the Folk Festival Endowment fund is now more than $500,000. We hope, with your help, to reach $1 million within the next two years. Thank you to patrons who have donated or announced future bequests. Some of these benefactors are named in the adjoining panel.

If you have any questions, please call Terry Wickham at 780-429-1899 or Karen Good, Edmonton Community Foundation, at 780-426-0015.
